physical therapy exercises for patients with diseases of the spine

Exercise therapy, what it is and why it is necessary, many people know. Okay, we met this abbreviation in childhood, when we were going on vacation to a children’s camp or a sanatorium, or when our health was failing. So what is it? Find out in the article.

Exercise therapy: what it is and why

Attention! The material is for informational purposes only. You should not resort to the treatments described in it without first consulting your doctor.

Varieties of exercises in medical complexes.

First of all, it should be noted that therapeutic exercises for the spine are divided into two types:

  • improvement of general health (including complexes of exercises for children and adults, either completely healthy or in the initial stages of diseases of a similar nature);
  • specialized thruster (designed to treat problems of a more serious level, with curvature of the spine, with inflammation of the sciatic nerve and other injuries of certain parts of the spine).

Based on this, an exercise therapy complex is selected, and the number of techniques (including those shown in numerous videos on the network) is so large today that it is customary to divide them into three main areas.

  • Broad-spectrum physical activity methods with dance elements (includes classical aerobics and step-aerobics, as well as those similar to them). Systems of this type are good because they not only have a beneficial effect on the health of the spine, but also simultaneously strengthen the cardiovascular and muscle fibers in general.
  • Strength techniques (some strength fitness modifications, athletic gymnastics, callanetics, etc.). They differ from traditional morning exercises or physical education in that they intensively train individual muscle groups, primarily the neck, back, and sacral region.
  • Oriental practices (wu-shu, qigong, yoga, etc.): they focus not on dynamics, but on statics. They are characterized by a large set of stretching exercises, in addition to working with correct breathing (it is believed that the breathing exercises for the thoracic spine of Chinese and Japanese gurus are generally unmatched).

Why are the exercises of this or that specially designed complex, performed strictly according to the prescribed method, important for the spine? The fact that the results are also complex:

  • the muscular framework is significantly strengthened, which keeps the vertebrae in the proper position due to a multiple decrease in the load on them;
  • the ligaments become more elastic, and therefore the risk of injury decreases;
  • reduces the risk of degradation and destruction of the joints;
  • improves metabolism and cell metabolism;
  • the work of the circulatory system is stabilized;
  • posture straightens;
  • the body becomes more resistant;
  • pain sensations disappear and, consequently, the state of health improves.

Thoracic department

Therapeutic exercises for the spine in the thoracic region are represented by many different exercises. Below we describe the most effective exercises for the spine (performed in a static or dynamic position). The thoracic region often suffers from pain in osteochondrosis and muscle spasms. Therefore, the best option for spinal recovery is a light morning workout. So, exercises to strengthen the thoracic region:

  • Press firmly against the wall with the back of the body, connect your hands in front of you and gradually, without sudden movements, raise your hands up, touching your ears. So stop for a minute and lower your hands relaxed.
  • Lie down on the floor, stretch your arms forward and lift your body, bending your lower back. Look straight ahead, with your head as high as possible. Hold on for a while and get off.
  • We lie on our stomach, bend our lower back, hands behind our heads. You should go as high as possible, stop for 30 seconds and go down smoothly. It is also about exercises for the flexibility of the spine. The main thing is smoothness, no jerks and a healthy spine is provided to you.
  • Planks (isometric exercises) are the most effective back exercises. To begin, just stand for 1-2 minutes, as long as the strength is sufficient. All the muscles of the back, buttocks, legs, arms are involved. But the thoracic region is best worked, since the deeper muscles are tense. They are what keep our vertebrae in the correct position.

Restoring and strengthening the spine in osteochondrosis is unconditionally a “bar”. It is performed with straight arms or arms bent at the elbows, the body stretched like a rope in a line. There can be dynamic and static execution options.

Lifting the tors

Regardless of the gymnastics prescribed by a doctor or chosen by you personally (therapeutic or prophylactic, for the spine as a whole or for the back, for the legs or any other isolated area), it must be performed according to a list of certain rules. .

  • If the pain intensifies during any exercise, it is necessary to immediately reduce the level of load or completely exclude this movement from the complex.
  • You cannot participate in exercise therapy during periods of acute exacerbations of disease.
  • All exercises are carried out without problems; therapeutic exercises of this type do not accept sudden movements.
  • Classes must be regular; otherwise, the therapeutic effect of them will be subtle, if not practically nil.
  • It is forbidden to proceed to the implementation of active exercises of the main complex without a preliminary warm-up and careful stretching.
  • Taking painkillers immediately before class is strictly forbidden (in this case, it will do much more harm than good).

Therapeutic gymnastics for diseases of the lumbar back.

Exercises for diseases of the lower back are difficult to perform if there is a pronounced pain syndrome. Therefore, before starting classes, it is recommended to relax the muscles and alleviate the condition a bit. Therapeutic gymnastics for patients with hernias and other pathologies is based on the following principles:

  • exercises are performed without sharp turns and jerks;
  • torso torso exercises are avoided;
  • jumping is not allowed;
  • do not exercise when discomfort or pain appears;
  • the load in the first lessons should be minimal.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the exercises for back sciatica in more detail on our portal.

Wellness complexes

Among all the complexes of exercise therapy that improve the health of the problematic spine, therapeutic exercises for the cervical spine predominate, to a greater extent for the thoracic spine, and to a lesser extent for the thoracic and sacral spine.

The most famous here is the so-called Shishonin gymnastics (which began to spread massively from 2008, when the whole world learned about the work of this brilliant doctor, head of the Health Clinic XXI Century and a full member of the New Academy of Sciences. York).

Widely used both in Russia and abroad, the Shishonin method provides tremendous neck pain relief to millions of patients, with virtually no contraindications.

Of the dozens of movements, the most universal exercises are:

  • slow turns of the head with fixation in the final position (lower, lean back, turn left and turn right by 90 °, with repetition of 10 times);
  • circular, also performed very smoothly, movement of the head in a clockwise direction and then in the opposite direction, with a number of repetitions of 15 times);
  • “Turn with pressure”: consists of the same movements as described in the first paragraph, but at the same time they are performed despite the resistance of the hand by pressing the head in the opposite direction (a movement that strengthens the cervical muscles is repeated 10 times for each type of rotation);
  • “We carry a jug” – in fact, it is replaced by a thick book that is placed on the head for several minutes (it is obvious that in Arab countries, where this method of transporting heavy loads is traditional, residents do not have problems with cervical vertebrae).

Thoracic region and lower back

  • Cat. It consists of alternately arching the backrest and then tilting it down from a position on all fours. Fixing of limit positions: from 5 to 10 seconds, the number of repetitions: 10-15, the breathing is calm and measured, all the movements are smooth.
  • Bridge. It is necessary to lie on your back, stretch your arms along the body, palms down, and bend your knees. Then slowly begin to lift your pelvis, trying to get into a position where your hips and body form a straight line. Fixation at the limit point – 5 seconds, then return to the starting position (number of repetitions – 10).
  • Snake. We lie on our stomach, stretching our arms back. Then we begin to take the ‘snake position’, lifting the upper body as high as possible with the head tilted back. Fixation at the limit point – 5 seconds, then return to the starting position (number of repetitions – 10).
  • Swing your legs. The starting position is on all fours. Then, one leg is pulled back (until it is fully extended) and makes a smooth upward motion, as far as possible. The final position is not fixed, the number of repetitions is 10, after which the leg changes.
  • Pair of scissors. Lying on their back and stretching their legs up, they perform movements of the sliding and sliding blades of the scissors. The number of repetitions is 15-20.
